The dust is settling on Coachella Weekend 1, and Weekend 2 is right around the corner. The lineup is incredible, the fits are immaculate - and something else is shifting in the desert air. Look closer at what people are actually drinking, and you'll notice a vibe that's very 2026: lighter, cleaner, and increasingly alcohol-free.

Yep - festival culture is having a quiet revolution, and it's happening one zero-proof drink at a time.

GEN Z IS DRINKING DIFFERENTLY

Let's start with the numbers. Studies consistently show that Gen Z drinks significantly less alcohol than Millennials or Gen X did at the same age. Gallup polling has found that the share of 18–34 year olds who drink has dropped notably compared to two decades ago. Meanwhile, a 2023 survey by IWSR Drinks Market Analysis found that the no- and low-alcohol category grew by double digits in key markets - driven largely by younger consumers looking for something that fits their lifestyle without the morning-after regret.

It's not about being "anti-fun" - quite the opposite. Gen Z has grown up with a sharper awareness of mental health, wellness, and being present. Drinking to excess just doesn't fit that. And when you're at a festival and you want to dance until 2am without feeling awful, a well-crafted AF drink makes a lot of sense.

FESTIVALS ARE TAKING NOTICE

Organisers and vendors are catching up with the demand. Where once the only "soft" option at a festival bar was a flat Coke or an overpriced orange juice, 2025 and 2026 have seen a genuine shift. Premium non-alcoholic spirits, craft zero-proof cocktails, and AF beers are now showing up on menus at some of the world's biggest events.

We know this first-hand. Last year, Free AF served at Coachella — and the response was extraordinary. People weren't settling for a non-alcoholic option as a consolation prize. They were actively choosing it. They wanted something that tasted amazing, looked great in hand, and let them stay sharp for every set they'd been planning to see for months.

That's the shift. It's not about restriction - it's about intention.

MODERATION = MAINSTREAM

The "sober curious" movement - the idea that you can explore a life with less alcohol without fully committing to sobriety - has moved well beyond a niche wellness trend. It's now part of how a growing number of festival-goers think about their experience. You might have a drink or two and then switch to AF. You might go the full weekend without a drop and feel genuinely great about it.

What's driving it? Health awareness plays a big part, but so does the simple reality that the products have got so much better. When an alcohol-free option actually tastes incredible - complex, refreshing, and satisfying - there's no trade-off. You're not sacrificing the experience. You're enhancing it.

THE 2026 FESTIVAL SEASON LOOKS A LITTLE DIFFERENT

As the northern hemisphere festival season kicks into gear - from Coachella to Glastonbury to every boutique event in between - expect to see AF options front and centre, not tucked away as an afterthought. The demand is there. The culture has shifted. And the drinks, frankly, have never been better.

Whether you're going fully alcohol-free this summer or just want something brilliant to sip between sets, 2026 is the best time ever to explore what's possible beyond the bar.
